Upgrading Nikon D90 to Nikon D7100... worth it?

Just had my upgrade from D90 to D7100. I'm really quite skeptical and afraid of being disappointed about my dslr body upgrade instead of getting a new lens... well guess what... I'm glad I did!!!

As a user of D90 for almost 5yrs, so far here's what I think of a D7100 huge advantages for me:

Nokia Lumia 720 vs 820?

My personal thoughts?

The model number of Lumia 820 and 720 really speaks for itself. 820 is indeed a higher model. Why? CPU!

I tested the Lumia 720 and my immediate disappointment is the speed especially navigating and loading apps which is really pretty close to my good old HD7 than on my Lumia 920.

RMA Seasonic X760 PSU, receives X750?

My problem with my Seasonic X760 is that I'm having problem powering up my system unless I unplug and plug the power at quick motion or switch my AVR off-then-on. I recently tried removing all powered devices such as SSD, HDD, ODD and actually even replaced my GPU /w 2 6pin to a low profile GPU... still no luck. I also use the motherboard power button, same issue no response.

Tried to isolate the problem by plugging my old/extra power supply... surprisingly it powers up my system flawlessly.

I still trust my Seasonic X760. I actually read voltage rails before I plug in and I know how awesome my PSU is... it’s that the only problem I had now is powering up.

X79 setup it is!

I love my Q6600 and it also serves me well for almost 5yrs in January 2013!

Though if my motherboard is not having issues like USB power failures, often power on button / cold boot failures, often CMOS resetting after OC for quite some time, a bit loosed ram & pcie slot... maybe I will be still using this system for another year. Also since I'm a family man now, power consumption and heat may become a big factor to my upgrade reason.

So I finally decided for X79 setup. From my rough analysis with q6600 overclocked to 3ghz, the i7 3820 is 50%+ more faster, 30%+ less power on idle, and 10%+ less power on full throttle.

Besides I already bought all I need for my upgrade...
- Intel Core i7 3820 3.6-3.8GHz
- Asus P9X79 Pro Motherboard
- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo Turbo Dual Fan CPU Cooler
- GSKILL RipjawsZ 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 1600mhz
- Crucial M4 128gb sata

My existing will be...
- Lian-Li PC7 casing
- Seasonic X760 PSU
- MSI Frozr II AMD Radeon 6950 2gb
- Seagate 1TB and 1.5TB

...now I can't wait to bench this baby this weekend!

Wish me luck! :)

Upgrading Intel Core2 Quad 6600 to Intel Core i7 3820... worth it?

Here's just my rough percentage estimate of the improvement of Q6600 -> i7 3820 from the benchmark source @ cpu-wars.com, Intel Core i5 & i7 Game Benchmarks, Intel Core i7-3820 Synthetic Benchmarks

MULTI-TRHEADING: The factor of all upgrade reasons, speed!

q6600 @3ghz -> i5 750 = 23% improvement
i5 750 -> i7-3820 = 33% improvement
Q6600 @3ghz -> i7 3820 = 56% improvement

So, do I love or hate Windows 8?

I hate metro originally (like I mentioned in my previous blog post : Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8 thoughts...) but for the sake of catching up on development trend so I installed it in my laptop together with Visual Studio 2012 Express and for Windows Phone 8, off course.

Kinda weird seeing there is no start menu and all metro screen at first, but somehow in just 1 day I finally starting to love it for few reasons:

Letting go my Nikon 85mm F1.8D...

I'm already giving my AF Nikkor 85mm F1.8D. Here are the full details posted at tipidpc.com:
http://www.tipidpc.com/viewitem.php?iid=20444915&page=

I Recently realized that I "rarely" use this lens because of its very specialized purpose to a certain scenario only eg. more room space, better background to produce nice bokeh, and outdoor portraits.

Laggy Galaxy S3 vs. Kiddie-screen iPhone 4S vs. Beautiful Lumia 900

Tried to be open here and not being bias (lol). I read the content and posts of Yuga's Galaxy S3 vs. iPhone 4S vs. Lumia 900

You will see some posts like...
"Samsung Galaxy SIII is a clear winner here"
"Overall, Samsung Galaxy S3 is a great phone!"

Tatto 4G Flash / Huawei E357... is really a 4G?

Based on the internet I learned that:
- HSDPA (3.5G) = up to 14mb dl
- HSPA+ (4G) = up to 21mb dl

If my knowledge is right E357/4G Flash is actually 3.5G unlike the E353/Smart Rocket which is 4G! Which I think make sense because of e357/4G Flash's cheaper price.

So that's it... Globe's fail marketing on 4G naming -- at least for me. Also I don't think unlocking will make e357 to access HSPA+/4G.

WDTV Live Streaming (WDTV LIVE2)

I'm using WDTV Live Streaming (WDTV LIVE2) bought last 2 weeks in the US... I must say it's a lot better than my WDTV Gen1 and WDTV Live by far!

Already got 2 firmware updates while using it for weeks and it looks like there's plenty of stuff they need to enhance... though I haven't experience any problems at all.

3x LG Flatron E2360 23" + MSI Twin Frozr II AMD Radeon 6950 2GB = Eyefinity mode!

Eyefinity project done!

My setup use 3x LG Flatron E2360 23" and MSI Twin Frozr II AMD Radeon 6950 2GB. I have to buy separate mini display port adapter to enable 3rd display plug.

Got good deals with the same LED models I have and I think my model is almost phased out hehehe. For my videocard, I sold my 6850 and replaced it with 2nd hand MSI Frozr 6950 so technically I spend only P5k from my savings. Totally worth it!

PC System Upgrade CPU vs GPU?

Sa gaming ala masyado maitutulong ang CPU compared pag inupgrade mo GPU as it will only improve overall performance. That is kung galing ka sa cpu from ancient generation, probably better CPU will show improvement but not that much. How come?

I won't go into details but it should be obvious lalung-lalo na pag ni-claim sarili mo na techie :)

I remember I almost upgrade my q6600 P35 system to i7 860 but since I'm cheap and tight on budget it would be wiser for me to upgrade the GPU sell my current GPU instead. It turns out my system gained significantly faster gaming performance and I save almost 8k-10k. After more than a 1 year, I'm still happy!

AMD Radeon HD 6950 vs Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti... which is which?

Simple, let's put it this way...

AMD Radeon HD 6950 = Eyefinity
Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti = Physx

In Comparison...

Probably you won't see any speed difference between the 2 except for PhysX exclusive games in favor of 560ti.

6950 1gb & 2gb is identical in terms of speed but both takes the lead by a great deal in a shader driven game compared to 560ti.

My next game... Battlefield 3

After I finished Battlefield Bad Company 2 game, I can say it was the best game ever. I was a big fan of that game. It was like more than a year ago that I told myself that my PC should be ready for their next game.

I saw many games that was released after but I wasn't impressed with the gameplay... and probably won't run playable on my PC (Crysis2).

I actually stopped playing for over a year and never tried any fps games. I was busy trying new things.

Choosing between Nikon D90 or D7000?

D7000 is a lot better than D90 for one reason that it already match (or somehow beats) D300s feature... or more.

The reason I would probably get D7000 for it's better AF, more AF points, better video recording and more external function -- but using weak lens then it's pretty useless. Thanks to my Nikon 85mm/1.8, video with my D90 looks awesome (except the wobbling).

Dual SD is more like a PRO function to me. I never had any jpg/raw failure from my D60 for the past 2yrs to D90 1yr plus as well. I always move files thru my backup machine when I got home and keep my SD card clean.
